Turning Scientific Innovation into Commercial Value

Technology Commercialization & Business Development for Science and Technology-Driven Organizations

I am Maziar Matloubi, a Technology Commercialization and Business Development Advisor with a PhD in Chemistry and more than 10 years of experience at the intersection of technology development, innovation, commercialization and business growth.

I help science and technology-driven organizations turn complex innovations into valuable market opportunities, differentiated products, strategic partnerships and sustainable business growth.

My experience includes projects with multinational corporations, technology leaders, specialized SMEs, research institutions and international innovation partners, spanning technology development, product innovation, market assessment, commercialization and business development.

I work with organizations facing questions that often determine whether a promising technology becomes a successful business:

Where is the strongest market opportunity?

Which applications, customers and markets should be prioritized?

What truly differentiates the technology, and why should customers choose it?

How should the offering be positioned, priced and brought to market?

Which partnerships can accelerate market access and growth?

My role is to connect scientific and technical potential with customer value, market opportunity and business execution.

Converting Complex Research into Scalable Commercial Assets

My experience spans the path from research and technology development to industrial implementation, customer engagement, market adoption and business development.

Across different projects and organizations, I have worked on challenges involving:

Technology & Product Development
Developing and evaluating technologies, products, formulations, materials and processes from early concepts through industrial application.

Commercialization & Market Development
Assessing applications and markets, defining value propositions, developing routes to market and identifying new business opportunities.

Business Development & Strategic Partnerships
Engaging customers and industry partners, developing business opportunities and building relationships that connect technology with market demand.

Technology & Market Intelligence
Evaluating technologies, competitors, customer needs, market dynamics and emerging opportunities to support strategic decisions.

Innovation & Strategic Assessment
Supporting technology selection, innovation priorities, product enhancement and the technical and business evaluation of new opportunities.

I have also contributed to national, European and international research and innovation programs, working in multidisciplinary environments and connecting scientific development with industrial and business objectives.

This experience has shaped a perspective that extends beyond either research or strategy consulting alone: I have worked with innovation from inside the development process and at the point where technology meets customers, markets and business decisions.

Cross-Industry Perspective

My direct project experience spans science and technology-driven industries including:

Pharmaceuticals & Biotechnology
Medical Technology & Healthcare
Diagnostics, Test Kits & Consumables
Specialty Chemicals & Advanced Materials
Polymers & Biomaterials
Luxury Goods & High-End Cosmetics
Automotive & Advanced Mobility
Energy, Sustainability & Industrial Technologies

This breadth is more than industry exposure. It shapes how I identify opportunities.

Some of the most attractive growth opportunities emerge across traditional industry boundaries, when a technology, material, formulation or capability developed for one market can solve a valuable problem in another.

A cross-industry perspective can reveal new applications, customer segments, strategic partners and routes to market that may otherwise remain overlooked.

Scientific Depth. Business Perspective.

I hold a PhD in Chemistry and Biomaterials from the University of Freiburg, Germany, with multidisciplinary expertise spanning advanced materials, biomaterials and tissue engineering, small molecules, RNA technologies and emerging deep-tech applications.

My scientific work includes peer-reviewed research, international patents and the development of novel technologies. This foundation allows me to engage with complex technologies at their core rather than assessing them only from a market perspective.

Combined with more than 10 years of industrial and business experience, I can examine an opportunity from both sides:

Is the technology genuinely differentiated?

Does it solve a problem that matters to customers?

Where can it create the greatest value?

Which applications and markets offer the strongest potential?

What is the most credible path from technology to market?

This combination of scientific depth and business perspective enables me to translate technical advantage into customer relevance, strategic choices and market opportunities.

How I Approach Commercialization

For technology-driven organizations, commercialization is rarely just a sales challenge. It starts much earlier.

Technical performance alone does not determine market success. A strong technology needs the right application, a meaningful customer problem, a compelling value proposition, the right business model and a credible route to market.

I therefore look at opportunities through three connected perspectives:

Technology
Scientific differentiation, technical feasibility, development requirements, scalability and application potential.

Market
Customer needs, competitive alternatives, market attractiveness, priority applications and emerging opportunities.

Business
Value proposition, business model, pricing and value capture, go-to-market, strategic partnerships and growth potential.

Bringing these perspectives together helps leadership teams answer four fundamental questions:

Where should we play?
How can we differentiate and win?
Where should we invest?
What needs to happen next?

The objective is not simply to develop a strategy. It is to create a clear and actionable path from technology to business value.

When Clients Involve Me

Clients typically involve me when they face an important decision, need an independent perspective or want to accelerate an opportunity around technology and growth.

Commercializing New Technologies
Which applications, customers and markets should we prioritize? How should the offering be positioned and priced, and what is the right route to market?

Identifying New Markets & Applications
Where can an existing technology, product or capability create additional value? Which applications and customer segments offer the strongest potential?

Business Development & Strategic Partnerships
Which customers, partners and strategic relationships can accelerate market access, adoption and growth?

Pricing & Value Strategy
What value does the offering create for customers? How should pricing, positioning and the business model be structured to capture that value while supporting market adoption?

Market & Competitive Intelligence
How is the market evolving? What are competitors doing, what do customers value, and where are the most attractive opportunities?

Technology Scouting & Innovation Strategy
Which emerging technologies matter? Where should we develop internally, partner, invest or acquire to strengthen future growth?

Technology & Commercial Due Diligence
Is the technology genuinely differentiated, economically attractive and strategically relevant? What are the key technical, market and business risks associated with an investment, partnership or acquisition?

From Insight to Execution

My work does not necessarily end with an assessment or recommendation.

Depending on the engagement, I support clients in moving from analysis and strategic direction to customer engagement, partner identification, business development and market execution.

This is particularly valuable when organizations need not only to understand an opportunity, but also to translate that opportunity into concrete action.

Expert-Led. Direct. Collaborative.

Clients work directly with me throughout the engagement, from defining the critical questions through analysis and strategic recommendations to execution support.

I combine scientific depth, business judgment and strategic thinking with a pragmatic, hands-on approach. Depending on the challenge, I work across leadership, R&D, innovation, business development and commercial teams, helping connect perspectives that are often separated inside organizations.

Where additional specialist expertise is required, I draw on a trusted international network spanning industry, research institutions, healthcare, technology, marketing, distribution and retail.

This model provides clients with direct senior-level involvement while retaining access to broader specialist expertise when the project requires it.

I am based in Freiburg, Germany, and work with clients and partners internationally.
